Drug of choice for antibiotic - associated pseudomembranous colitis. Anaphylaxis and treatment of endocarditis and other sepsis caused by Gram-positive cocci. Effective in patients with methacillin resistant stap hy lococcal aureus infection.

Hypotension, flushing, erythema, urticaria, pruritus, nausea, fever, chills. C.f. p rescribing in renal disease p . 38.
Administration with other ototoxic or nephrotoxic drugs like aminoglycosides increase the risk of these toxicities. |

Adult: 1g every 12 hours or 500mg every 6 hours. Pediatric: 10-
45mg/kg every 8-12 hours. |

Manufacturer advises use only if potential benefit outweighs risk. Plasma-vancomycin concentration monitoring is essential to reduce risk of fetal toxicity.

Present in milk—significant absorption following oral administration unlikely.
