CATEGORY A DRUGS

  1. Drugs in Category A will be free of cost to all beneficiaries

  2. Beneficiaries must be Barbadian Citizens or Permanent Residents who fall into one of the following categories:

 a) Patients attending a publicly operated pharmacy

 b) Patients attending a Private Participating Pharmacy who fall into one of the following categories:

  (i) Persons over 65 years of age

  (ii) Children under 16 years of age

  (iii) Persons suffering from diabetes, hypertension, cancer, asthma, glaucoma and or epilepsy.

  3. All drugs in this category should be made available at a controlled duty-free and VAT-free price to non-beneficiaries.

  4. Patients will be able to access Category A drugs by presenting a prescription written by a registered medical or dental practitioner. Beneficiaries must also present one of the approved forms of identification:

 (i) Barbados Identification Card (ID) which identifies the bearer as Barbadian";

 (ii) Barbados Passport with the Barbados National Registration number;

 (iii) Barbados Identification Card plus a passport of citizenship with the stamp from the Barbados Immigration Department that reads: "I hereby certify that the holder is a Permanent Resident of Barbados", or; Barbados Identification Card plus a Permanent Resident's certificate issued by the Immigration Department."


CATEGORY B DRUGS

  1. Patients can only benefit from these drugs after the Medical Officer of Health in the respective polyclinic or outpatient clinic and a Consultant in any of the Government institutions request the drug through the Chairman, Drug & Therapeutics Committee, QEH or Director, BDS and approval is given.

  2. Approved private sector Consultants may also request Category B drugs for their diabetic patients.

  3. Category B drugs will be made available to all Barbadian Citizens, CARICOM nationals and Permanent residents “free of cost” at the point of service in the public sector and at controlled duty-free prices in the private sector.

  4. Beneficiaries must present one of the approved forms of identification to access Category B drugs.

 (i) Barbados Identification (ID) Card which identifies the bearer;

 (ii) Barbados Passport with the Barbados National Registration number;

 (iii) Barbados Identification Card plus a passport of citizenship with the stamp from the Barbados Immigration Department that reads: "I hereby certify that the holder is a Permanent Resident of Barbados", or;

 (iv) Barbados Identification Card plus a Permanent Resident's certificate issued by the Immigration Department."


CATEGORY C DRUGS

1. Patients will pay for drugs in this category in the private sector at greatly subsidized cost through the VAT free and duty free concessions.

2. Patients will be able to access Category C drugs by presenting a prescription written by a registered medical or dental practitioner
