Exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, urninary tract infections, prostatitis, travellers’ diarrhoea, brucella, chlamydia, mycoplasma, rickettsia, acne vulgaris (low dose). Pleural effusions due to malignancy or cirrhosis.
Drug sensitivity, tooth discoloration, nausea, vomiting, epigastric burning, photosenitivity, vaginal candidiasis, diarrhoea. Renal or hepatic impairment. Not recommended in children under 12 years old, pregnant or breast feeding females. May decrease effectiveness of birth control pills and may cause photosensitivity. C.f. prescribing in liver and renal disease p. 18;
Adult and Children 12 years and over: 250-500mg every 6 hours.
See BDS supply protocols pg. 3.
Antacids, milk, oral iron (chelates and reduces absorption)
Avoid in pregnant women; effects on skeletal development have been documented in the first trimester in animal studies. Administration during the second or third trimester may cause discoloration of the child’s teeth.
Should not be given to women who are breast-feeding (although absorption and therefore discoloration of teeth in the infant is probably usually prevented by chelation with calcium in milk).
