PROCAINAMIDE
ANTIARRHYTHMIC AGENTS
A class IA antiarrhythmic used for the short -term management ofsevere or symptomatic ventricular arrhythmias.
Hypotension, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, giddiness, mental depression. With long term use- SLE type syndrome, agranulocytosis(rarely ). Regular antinucleofactor (ANF) testing should be done on patientson long term procainamide. Discontinuation of treatment should be considered in any patient develops a positive ANF titre. Rapid intravenous dosage may result in severe hypotension, ventricular fibrillation, and asystole. C.f prescribing in liver and renal disease.
Oral: 500mg - 1g stat, then 250mg -1g every 6 hours. Inj: 1mg/min i.v to a maximum of 10mg.
Procainamide is distributed in breastmilk and not recommended for lactating women.
