ASPIRIN
SALICYLATES
Mild to moderate pain and fever, myocardial and stroke.
May cause G.I. bleeding, irritation, rashes, bronchospasm, nasal polyps. Contraindicated with G.I. ulceration, anticoagulants, bleeding disorders, gout and in children and adolescents with viral illness due to possible increased risk of Reye’s syndrome. May cause G.I. bleeding when taken with alcohol. Overdose causes vomiting and tinnitus. Generally considered contraindicated in children under 12 years. c.f. prescribing in liver and renal.disease

300-900mg every 4-6 hours as necessary. Usual maximum 4g daily. Soluble or E.C. may be best for chronic use. See BDS supply protocols pg. 4 for maximum reimbursable quantities.
Use antiplatelet doses with caution during third trimester; impaired platelet function and risk of hemorrhage; delayed onset and increased duration of labour with increased blood loss. Avoid analgesic doses in the last few weeks of pregnancy it possible.
Aspirin is distributed in breastmilk. Use with caution in lactating women.
