Active Ingredient CHLORDIAZEPOXIDE
Therapeutic Class PHENOTHIAZINES
Indications For short term relief of anxiety and tension in neuroses. Adjunct in
acute alcohol withdrawal. Also see Major Tranquliser on p.265.
Caution Dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia and slurred speech. Short term usage recommended because they are habit forming. Not recommended in children. C.f. prescribing in liver and renal disease p. 12; 25.
Dose Range Anxiety: 10mg 3 times daily increased if necessary to 60-100mg daily in divided doses. Alcohol withdrawal Syndrome: 25-100 mg repeated as needed after 2 to 4 hours, up to a maximum of 300 mg daily . Elderly: half adult dose.

Indications To control psychotic excitement.
Caution Drowsiness, precipitating confusional psychoses and postural hypotension with injections, nasal congestion and dry mouth. C.f. prescribing in liver and renal disease p. 12; 26.
Dose Range Oral: 75-300mg daily in divided doses. (But up to 1g may be given
in p sy choses). Inj: 25-50mg p er every 6-8 hours.

Indications Schizophrenia and other psychoses. Depot injections for ambulant
psychotics.
Caution Parkinsonian extrapy ramidal effects, drowsiness, hypotension.
Dose Range Adult: Tab: 2-10mg daily in divided doses. Inj: 12.5-100mg monthly.

Indications Useful in paranoid states. [Schizop hrenia]

Dose Range Adult: 12-24mg daily in divided doses. Elderly: Use quarter-half of
adult dose.

Dose Range Adult: 150-300mg in 3 divided doses to a maximum of 800mg/day . Elderly: 30-100mg daily . Pediatric: 0.5mg/kg/day in divided doses to a maximum of 3mg/kg/day .

Indications Paranoid and withdrawn states.
Caution Extrapy ramidal symptoms, ocular pigmentation. C.f. prescribing in liver and renal disease p. 18; 38. Safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 6yrs of age.
Dose Range Adult: 2- 5 mg twice daily, gradually increased to a usual range of
15-20 mg daily; in severe or resistant psychoses daily doses of
40 mg or more have been given. Pediatric under 12 yrs: Up to 5mg
once daily .
