LORATADINE
SECOND GENERATION ANTIHISTAMINES
For the treatment of chronic idiopathic urticaria.
The most common side effects are headache and nausea. Co- administration of loratadine with drugs that inhibit the cytochrome P450 system will result in an increase in plasma concentrations of loratadine. May still exhibit low incidence of sedation. Use cautiously in patients with glaucoma. Do not use with cimetidine.
Adults and children 6 years and older: 10mg once daily. Pediatric:
2-5 years: 5mg once daily. Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with liver and renal insufficiency.
Most antihistamines are present in breast milk in varying amounts; although not known to be harmful, most manufacturers advise avoiding their use in mothers who are breast-feeding.
